"We've had 30 years of prosperity and there a lot of people whose maxim is asset prices only go up and interest rates only go down and they don't have the ability to adapt to today's changed circumstances," said Marcus Derwin, a turnaround consultant who has worked at KPMG, Allco, AMP and NAB.

"We don't want things to fail but we recognise sometimes they have to and what is happening globally will blow back into Australia; it has to."
